NYC offers quite a lot of options for trendy dessertophiles, what with the recent boom in artisan and faux-artisan cupcake innovators, but for the one-two diabetes-inducing punch of dessert and alcohol, Sweet Revenge takes, as they say, the cake and beer.

Cupcakes are like sex - even when it’s bad it’s good, as long as it’s just moist enough with not too much frosting. So let’s get this out of the way – Sweet Revenge has amazing cupcakes. So more notable is their acute selection of accompanying beer and wine. The only thing missing is a place to nap when you finish.

I went for the original, the “Sweet Revenge,” a peanut butter cake with chocolate ganache filling and peanut butter fudge frosting ($3.50, worth all 350 pennies), paired with a German Weihenstephaner Hefe Weiss beer ($8, rarely found in bars, gorgeous) and boy howdy… the flavor combination hit me like a peanut butter truck fueled with Hefe Weiss beer. Cupcakes and beer sounds like the concoction a 9-year-old boy would make when left to his own culinary devices (now there’s a good concept for a restaurant), but a first class beer like Weihenstephaner is a masterful choice. Its aromatic banana, citrusy, slightly nutty wheat taste compliments the sweet, creamy nuttiness of the cake and frosting.

While the dessert could have used more chocolate ganache filling to offset the peanut butter, and I couldn’t tell if I was getting a headache from the ultra sweet combo or the wide range of girl music playing (from Tori Amos to, puzzlingly, Shakira and TATU), the pairing was a success, and a nap was taken shortly thereafter.

They offer many other revenge dishes best served sweet, and savory, including a forthcoming brunch menu. Most affordable is their Happy Hour from 4-8, where sangria or select wines and a cupcake are only $10.

There are plenty of places to get a drink and see some art in Manhattan’s famously art and booze-fueled East Village. And sure, there are probably a few places to get a drink and see some slam poetry in the East Village. But where else can you get a drink and see some slam poetry in non-profit arts theater rooted in the early ’70’s Nuyorican cultural movement and the center of multi-cultural poetry in the East Village? Ok, sure, maybe a couple places. But where else will the poetry actually be any good? Nuyorican Poets Cafe.

Ask anyone in New York, we’ve all run into the same problem – too many poets to fit in our living room. It’s just kind of a New York thing. In 1973, poet Miguel Algarin actually did something about it and expanded his living room poet’s salon into a full-fledged small poet’s corner, and now an often over-stuffed stuffed poets café.

As it is a non-profit organization, it thrives on nurturing the under-nurtured artists of all races and backgrounds. Its ideological mission is dedicated to giving every voice a stage. NPC is able to offer a program of arts as diverse as the audience, from drama to comedy, poetry to jazz and hip hop, and has an open mic for each one genre for anyone to embarrass themselves on.

This is the appeal of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. The history of innovation and broken ground gives it depth, but the egalitarian and multi-cultural spirit is what lives on. Also, alcoholic spirits. So go experience the emotional catharsis of a slam poet bearing her soul in oddly syncopated rhythm like that one you heard in a vaguely offensive McDonald’s commercial that one time, and watch the complexities of race and class played out in a drama that’s not in an awkward moment at work. And much like work, enjoy some beer or wine while you’re doing it.

Drinking is one of the great things about summer, and drinking in NYC can be quite the challenge as well. So many choices, but so many let downs. Let ChangeUp help you find the best of the summer suds with this Best Of Summer Drink roundup.

The Delancey

There’s a lot to concede to when you make the choice to summer at Delancey, which is in every way a bar & nightclub. For one thing, depending on the night, you’ll be fraternizing with a mixture of douchebags and assholes. For another, you’ll have to decide between one shitty bottled beer or another – no draught. For another, you may need to be prepared to pay a cover, and you may wonder what the hell for. Then you’ll go up on the rooftop garden, and you’ll understand. Oh, that’s right, you’ll say, this is effing amazing.

thedelancey.com ;168 Delancey Street and Clinton St; Lower East Side; 212.254.9920

_________________________________________

Habana Outpost

Fortified by a large fence like a military base parking lot that you’d really like to get drunk and fat in, Habana Outpost, Fort Greene’s earth-conscious eatery, unofficial community center and summer headquarters for the thirsty and financially-impaired, holds within it a one-stop spot for summer. The Cuban-Mexican cuisine comes out of a truck parked outside and surrounded by picnic tables and their famous make-it-your-damn-self-you-lazy-shlub human-powered smoothie blending bike, their margaritas are frozen, their bathrooms run on rain water and their customers run on Six Point beers at $2.50 a cup.

Hanana Outpost ; 757 Fulton St. at S. Portland; Brooklyn;718.898.9500

_________________________________________

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden

If you’re in the mood to casually imbibe a friendly glass of craft beer and savor some delicious food as the warm winds blow through the trees, then you know it’s summer. If that beer is a $5 dollar mug of Staropramen and the food is a plate of perogies with sauerkraut, then you know you’re at Bohemian Hall. This Czech social club turned beer garden has everything you’d look for in a great Czech beer garden: Czech beer and a garden.

Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden; 29-19 24th Avenue and 31st; Astoria; 718.274.4925

_________________________________________

Painkiller

There’s nothing worse than a bar with a half-assed theme – whether that ass be literal or figurative, it best be full. Painkiller is a bar that takes its tiki seriously. Established and run by tikiphiles that believe in, as stated in their exhaustively researched website thesis statement, the philosophical connection between the Polynesian islands and the island of Manhattan. This bar gives 100% full-assed effort in the preservation and presentation of true tiki style, from cutesy things like calling their store hours “hours of relaxation” to tireless work on their pina colada and scorpion bowls that will definitely relax your body and brain-cells alike.

Painkiller; 49 Essex Street and Grand; Manhattan; 212.777.8454

_________________________________________

Mission Dolores

The relatively low level of charm maintained by the industrial zone that stretches over 4th avenue in Brooklyn went up considerably with the addition of Mission Dolores, a unique open air bar created mostly out of reclaimed materials and good old-fashioned heart, at home in the striped-down car repair shop vibe of its surroundings. With a similar selection and appreciation of craft beers as sister establishment Bar Great Harry, Dolores expands the idea with a stunning menu of 21 rotating craft beers, all to be enjoyed in the open courtyard that sits not outside the bar but inside it, like a donut. A donut made of amazing beer.

Mission Dolores; 249 Fourth Ave and Carroll St; Brooklyn; 718.399.0099

Going green is the new 22, which is the new gay which is the new 40, which is the new…well you see where this is going. Forget the trendiness of it all and just remember that you can easy Mamma Nature’s pines while easing your own at Terroir Tribeca.

Set up in trendy digs complete soft overhead lighting, dark wooded ornaments, a bi-level digs with basement seating and sexy dining room, Terroir is the ‘elitist wine bar for everyone’. The second outpost the popular East Village location, this wine bar is seeking sustainability and quality while kicking out the once common wino mentality.

The menu is deep with biodynamic and sustainable, earth friendly vineyards. The menu is repping Rieslings like a 2008 Kabinett, a 2007 smaragd from Wachau, and a sexy 2007 from Finger Lakes. Lookin for that dark berry? Peep the 2008 Schiava for a smooth, oaky taste, or a Pinot Noit from Casablanca Valley, or get supa dupa baller and try a glass of the Chateu Belregard from Saint-Emilion.

If you’re looking to wet that whistle in a more unique fashion, check out their list of mixed drinks, provocatively mixed for your green loving pleasure. The house has got bevs like the Bana Belt with Riesling, cucumber, blueberry and rosemary, and the Bergamo with san bitter and sparkling wine, as well as a drink with Brooyn buzz bomb, ginger, and madiera lime aptly named the Port of Funchal, which isn’t as ‘Funchy’ as it sounds.

On top of the liquid luxury, the Terroir’s also got brews like Six Point double IPA and Kelso’s Carrol Garden Wit, so head over to the wine bar that’s not only keepin’ it Earth friendly, but will also keep you classy with the glassys.

It doesn’t take watching Youtube hit ‘Grape Lady Falls’ to know that making wine can be fun, and apparently dangerous. Providing the joy of wine making without the bodily harm is California Wineworks.

Located just outside the City in Ramsey, NJ, CW is a different kind of vineyard. “By panning down wine making to it’s simplest form and demystifying the process” Wineworks hopes to instill a lifetime passion for wine making and enjoyment in each of it’s patrons, which means you might have to give up slapping that bag of Franzia every Friday night.

The process is fairly simple. First you have to choose what kind of taste you are looking for, red or white, French oak or American barrel? Once you have an idea of what you’re trying to create, you have to choose the variety of Northern Cali grapes via their ‘grape details directory’. After the taste is chosen and the grapes are ordered, the process has begun. The vineyard encourages you to visit the facility and be a direct part of the crushing and fermentation process, which’ll be a good break from the couch fermenting you do after work every day.

Outside of creating your own vino, Wineworks also has a ton of great pre-mades, using the highest quality fruit from Stagecoach Vineyards in California, so even if you’re too lazy to make your own, you can always cop a bottle ready to drink.

–

A hunger for brains isn’t usually what you feel after work. Besides, your zombie roommate already cleared the fridge of the good stuff. Well, if you’re lookin’ for a drink you can share with your undead companion, head over to Zombie Hut.

Adding some flavor to the BK bar scene, Hut’s a Greenpoint based Tiki Bar that’s got a low lit interior with a rustic vibe and just enough space. In typical tiki fashion, the walls are lathered in bamboo and masks, while cliché, work great in the sleeve of a bar.

Consistently offering great priced drinks at all operating hours, Zombie is a great after work watering hole. Bevs include the Gilligan, vodka, rum, and OJ, which are strong enough to erase a day’s worth watching your office mate pick his nose. Invite your kinda’ hot boss and share an intense scorpion bowl.

Z-words also got PBR (this is BK after all) for $2 as well as a litany of other cheap brews. This Smith st social hotspot gets you woosted for less, and gives you a great environment to meet other young professionals…with tasty looking mind goo.

Day trips are an essential part of living in a big city. Like, seriously, if that crazy homeless guy messes with you 13 or 14 more times, you’re outta there. Everyone once in a while you just need to escape. A destination worth exiting the Apple is Brotherhood Winery.

America’s oldest winery was established in 1839 and lies a little over an hour outside the city. A great day trip destination by all accounts, and not just because you saw Sideways a couple of times. Set up on the same grounds it originated on 170 years ago, Brotherhood’s got “cavernous grounds” with a massive lawn and picturesque landscape that draws to the mind scenes from the Patriot, minus the incessant ranting of an alcoholic maniac. You can also peep epic wine cellars decked with exposed brick and loads of barrels.

Brotherhood’s got stuff to do too you know. Dropping $10 gets you a tour of the winery, a tasting, and even a free wine glass. If you just wanna get straight to the vino, try a tasting that comes in three options, varietal, tradition, and world tour.

Brotherhood’s also hosts events like ‘Music in the Courtyard’ and ‘Fingerlakes Wine Festival’ making this possibly the most romantic place to go to for day outside of New York City, which is why you left in the first place right?

There’s something about rooftop bars that just scream, “I’m on the floor below you and can see up your skirt.” Well wear some pants, or don’t, but either way check out Bar 13.

13’s roof top dance deck is set in the West Village, but has that East Village charm that’s hard to find on this block. Decked with 3 floors that bump everything from house music to classic rock, 13 will totally make you think your still pre-gaming at your apartment nodding your head to your roommate’s playlist that JUST WONT END.

On the first floor, check out the retro interior complete with high ceilings, steel adornments, and flashback lights to blind you into a trance. The second floor is a little bit more of the same but features some crazy booths with what looks like vanilla moon pies emblazoned in the cushions. Topping it off is the rooftop featuring an actual laid-back scene complete with palm trees, seating, college heads, and the occasional creeper trying to get some college head.

Bar 13 has some great drink specials like the first floor 2-for-1 and weekly events including rooftop parties and Ibiza-esque 2nd floor dance raves, which would be awesome if it wasn’t your stupid roommate DJ’ing.

It’s time throw away outdated taboos and start drinking sugar water and kissing your sister again at Banjo Jims, or you can just chill and enjoy the music at one of the EV’s staple venues.

Set up in its corner digs in NY’s neighborhood of musical fame, BJ’s has that old school vibe that you can tell hasn’t changed much over the years. Still repping it’s dive bar roots, Jim’s is a homage to a lost friend who’s memory now lives on in the pickings of both up-and-coming and established musicians. Evident from the name, the joint is one of the staple spots in NYC that drives it’s surprisingly thriving country music scene. The dugout has live music 7 days a week and rocks everything from bluegrass, to folk, to rockabilly. Gigs range from the New Orleans jazz styling’s of Linnzi Zaorski to the ragtime melodies of Terry Waldo, to all out bluegrass jams led by Melody Allegra.

Banjo Jim’s holds a weekly open mic every Sunday allowing you to prove you watched Deliverance at least a couple of times. Most gigs are no cover but do require a one drink minimum, but assuming you been draining the shine for years now, a little vodka-soda shouldn’t be a problem.

There is obvious utility in two businesses sharing the same space; KFC and Taco Bell have successfully joined forces as the leading killer cows and things they claim are chickens. For two things far more humane yet also under the same roof, check out Sycamore.

Set up in Ditmas Park, this part flower shop-part bar Frankenstein creation is the brain child of the folks behind Farm on Addlerley. They liked the idea of being able to “walk in and smell flowers, not a dirty bar”, although that doesn’t solve the problem the dirty patrons who drink at said dirty bar. The front of the house is decked in a checkered tiled floor, and surrounded with consequent flora, creating a modern enough flower shop with an optimistically romantic feel. Flowers lead into the large, airy drinking area featuring a wrap around bar encased in blue wood and matching stools, starring the lit resin soaked bar, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ comes to mind, but only because Rick Moranis is the man. The ceiling maintains the picket fence routine being lined with unpainted wooden planks, but the gem of the space is the back yard which literally looks like your neighbors back patio, featuring plants, benches, and ivy lined walls.

________________________

The house is decked with local brews and an emphasis on microbreweries with the back garden pouring a different brewery every other Saturday. The spot is also partial to its bourbon and to prove it they have a constantly changing whiskey of the week; last week’s was Evan Williams Single Barrel.

________________________

As if a BK based beer carrying rose pushery isn’t cool enough, Sycamore also recently kicked off hosting live music creating the most romantic place ever to take a girl who, unlike Sycamore, probably won’t let you share any of her spaces.

Having just a taste of something isn’t always bad, especially if you’re Bear Grylls, in which case you’re probably tasting something you shouldn’t be anyway. Luckily, liquor tastings don’t involve twice passed fluids, and can be found right here in NYC.

For those looking to wet their whistle South of the Border style, check out the Tuesday night tequila tastings at La Biblioteca, NYCs premier tequila library. Set in the bottom floor of behemoth resto Zengo, Biblioteca’s a dimly lit, locker lined living room space with communal tables and comfy leather sofas. Come in each week from 5-7 and sample that weeks prized mezcal from a selection of over 400 bottles. The cost is $15 and gets you the tasting and face time with a select tequila ambassador who will drop some serious knowledge on both the tasting and production.

During the tasting, the library’s also got specially priced bottles which can be stored in of the lockers for up to 6 months, assuming that you have no respect for yourself and can’t finish a full bottle of tequila in one sitting…seriously?

This weeks tasting focuses on Riazul ; check out the site to see future tastings

Bringing the Classiness of Long Island to the shores of Governors Island

The beach is a great break from the city, but getting there can be almost as annoying as having to tell your mom to stop lathering sun tan lotion on to your unsuspecting backside. Don’t worry; she just wants to make sure her baby’s nice and lubed up! Here to help solve the travel part of the inconvenience is Water Taxi Beach at Governors Island.

With the Long Island based mini chain expanding to their 3rd location, GI’s first permanent food and bev station is bringing a full on sand beach just south of the City. Head over to check out the awesome view and grub via their two restaurants, the Beach Grill and the Backstage Café, with edibles featuring nine different kinds of hot dogs and light snacks. Perhaps one of the cooler parts of WTB is that you actually have to take a water taxi to get there. The boats leave from Brooklyn and Manhattan and are free on most nights, or are often included in your ticket if there is an event being held on the island.

Water Taxi Beach is a great place to get some awesome views of the city and score some cheap food, all while chillin’ out on a beach that didn’t take three hours to get to. Granted there is no swimming, but it’s not like you’ve been to the gym this year anyway.

Tiki Hits the LES: Painkiller

A Tiki bar in Manhattan has all the possibility to come off as being kitschy, touristy, and super lame, that is unless it’s the brainchild of the dudes behind Dutch Kills and is located in the uber hip LES. Bringing tacky cups and scorpion bowls to the “best island in the world” is Painkiller.

Painkiller is decked with bamboo, graffiti, and island like flair in its long and skinny getup. The bar is offering some awesome sounding concoctions like the Cradles of Life drinks which is “blend of silver and spiced rums, fresh citrus, house-made orgeatn (almond syrup), and Angostura bitters [and] is regally garnished with an inverted lime wedge and blessed with a dollop of Green Chartreuse”. If that doesn’t throw your taste buds into a tiki-tastic frenzy try the Twizzles, a drink named after the two pronged stick used to prepare and features cups like the Pieces of Eight which reps rum, lemon, lime, and house made passion fruit syrup or the Queens Park swizzle with demarera rum, syrup, a demarera cube, mint, and angostura. PK’s also got Mai Tais, frozens, and zombie punches to whet your whistle.

The spot is working up 4-6 person scorpion bowls as well, allowing for an affordable and fun way to get trashed with your friend’s beach week style. In addition, all the recipe’s are on their website so you can make the same drinks at your non-bamboo filled apt, unless that’s your style, in which case your probably a panda bear and shouldn’t be drinking.

If you’re headed to the East Village for a little bit of debauchery, be sure to stop by Mars Bar on 1st Street for a different kind of watering hole. The blacked out, graffiti covered windows hide the insides, but cross the threshold and behold: every inch of the walls are painted and tagged with drawings, expressive thoughts and hysterical concepts. Add your own, at your own risk; the clientele is as quirky as the décor.

______________

Spark up a conversation and you’re sure to hear an interesting story from one of the regulars-don’t fret they come in peace. The gumball machine filled with peanuts provides some munchies, and you can wash them down with one of the top shelf drinks between $5 and $6, or a $4.50 beer, which makes braving the natives definitely worth it. Using the bathroom is no easy task as you attempt to figure out which one is suitable for the appropriate gender. The attractive green creature on one door is seemingly innocent until you realize it is three-breasted alien with male genitalia.

______________

While you may not want to start your night here, ending it is definitely a crazy cap to a wild… you may even find yourself feeling a little spacey.

Start and finish your St. Patrick’s Day pub crawl at Rodeo Bar & Grill. This Third Avenue hot spot is known for its great drink specials, live music, and some of NYC’s best Tex-Mex cuisine. On the day where Guinness endlessly flows, Rodeo has decided to go green!

Join the party on March 17 with ALL NIGHT drink specials, such as the signature shamrock margarita, and live music.

While enjoying a green beer, don’t forget about the menu and regular drink specials that make Rodeo Bar & Grill a hot spot to stop on St. Patty’s Day. Take advantage of the many recession specials, one of which offers a can of PBR and a shot of whisky for $7. Lunch specials start at $9.95 and feature some of the best dishes at Rodeo, while the Burger and draft deal is also a steal at $8.95.

Rodeo Bar & Grill is also surrounded by several Irish pubs and other drinking establishments, making your St. Patty’s Day stumble fun as well as convenient. With festivities going all day, Rodeo is a must on the St. Patty’s Day route to oblivion!

Find Your New Favorite Band on the Cheap

One of the many reasons we are lucky to live in New York is the music scene. There’s always a pretty solid chance that the band playing your favorite neighborhood bar today is tomorrow’s indie darlings. In a city where artists flock to in order to play even the most ordinary venues, even those cheap, underground shows can feature amazing talent, kick-ass music, and possibly the next act you obsess over.

So, if you don’t have seventy bucks to shell out for an already famous band hitting big venues like MSG or the Nokia Theater, fear not. Grab ten bucks – make that twenty, I mean, you are going to a bar – and head out to check out an unknown. I promise it’ll still be a night of awesome music.

JOE’S PUB- young and old, famous and obscure play the stage at Joe’s Pub, one of the most reliable spots for solid music in the city—to hear bands with the likes of Emanuel and the Fear. Written up as one of L Magazine’s “Eight Artists You Need to Hear,” Emanuel and the Fear take on the challenge of lacing pop songs with intricate and grandiose symphonic composition – and they succeed. Referred to as a “rock orchestra,” they possess no mess, no triteness, just beautiful music that grabs you and moves you. Joe’s Pub: 425 Lafayette Street East 4th Street and Astor Place. www.joespub.com

ANGELS AND KINGS- If you’re more in the mood for some good old fashioned, fist pumping, hard rock, get yourself over to Angels and Kings on Monday, September 14th for The Holiday Electric. The Holiday Electric is a progressive rock outfit that unites the music scenes of New York and Boston – impressive since these two cities are rarely ever united in anything. The band is known for its live performances, bursting with energy and driving crowds to feel that energy. The Angels and Kings set will be a special treat: an acoustic set. Angels and Kings: 500 East 11th Street and Avenue A. www.angelsandkings.com

ARS NOVA- For you dirty hipsters out there, you’d probably enjoy a band dolled up in nineteenth century western wear, and that’s just what you’ll get at The Lisps’ show at Ars Nova on September 22nd. The group takes indie rock/pop and spins it into old world music, a la vaudeville, an inspiration quoted by the band. Think Eastern European, ragtime-y, brass-heavy, like The Decemberists, or Beirut with more attitude and energy. Ars Nova: 511 West 54th Street between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. arsnovanyc.com

Settle into a charming, mismatched table and await great service – the staff is super-attentive. The beer list is impressive if not huge, with rare finds and imports at decent prices hovering around $6.00 to $8.00.

The menu is tiny but clearly well thought out, consisting of a day-in-the-life of an unhealthy, probably overweight Irishman. But since you’re only indulging this once, try the corned beef with gruyere cheese sandwich, only $10.00 for the large, filling, deliciously salty and satisfying grub. To really go on a UK holiday, try fatty favorite Scotch Eggs, hard-boiled eggs wrapped in sausage then deep-fried. Holy heart attack, it’s good.

Everything on the small menu – pork sliders, Shepherd’s pie, split pea soup – is Irish class all the way, and totally mouthwatering. And yet somehow the items top off at $11.00!

The only flaws you can find here are verbal beer lists (you’ll forget the first three by the time you hear the last three), and the dangerous bench seats by the window that tip completely over with a slight lean.

In a city where you can barely have a good idea for less than a five spot, it is an absolute miracle that there exists a place where you can get a slice of pizza and a pint of beer for $4.50…total! And that is exactly what you will get at the Pizza Pub.

Aside from the full bar with a half dozen taps and a full rack of liquors, this doesn’t look much like a pub. In fact it looks like quite the anti-pub. With exposed brick covering half the place, and an awesome fire engine red that covers most of the walls, the Pizza Pub feels thoroughly modern.

The $4.50 beer and slice deal only applies to regular slices (which is fine because that is the best of the bunch) and the house beer which is usually a domestic light. There are some other frugal pairings (Pitcher and a pie, bottle of wine and a pie) that are also great deals you won’t find anywhere else.

They make a thicker than average grandma slice which is still quite tasty. And while the other special slices may not get rave reviews, you need not stray far from their standard slice which will cost you just under 2 bucks without a beer pairing. It’s plenty cheesy with a slightly crispier than normal crust which may or may not sustain its own weight if you insist on folding it. You do fold your slice don’t you?

The pizza oven in back also cranks out a handful of custom slices and pies as well as the option to add toppings to create your own slice.

For you non pizza eaters, half the menu is host to a variety of bite size bar favorites and other assorted tasties. The chicken tenders are great with a thick crisp, and the sweet potato fries are flavorful without being a greasy mess.

For the best service saddle up to the bar. Sitting at one of the dozen or so tables won’t keep you waiting too long for a pint, but sitting up close will get you feeling full a lot quicker.

The music is quality rock played from an ipod at a volume that encourages dancing in your chair while still allowing you to have a normal conversation. And around 7ish they dim the lights giving the place a bit more of a hip lounge feel.

And for all you late night party monkeys out there, make this your last stop on your bar crawl as it stays open until 4 am most nights. Because if there’s one thing you need after a night of drinking, it is a slice… and another beer!

Happy Hour Awards: NYC

Basically every bar has a happy hour, and if you’re looking to go out on a budget, that slot of time is always going to be your best bet for bargain booze. But, some bars really go above and beyond making it worth your while. So, skip the places that only offer a literal happy hour, and you can forget the places that only take a buck off three beers on tap. Go where the deals are, and where the deals last.

Longest Happy Hour:

Blind Tiger Ale House, 518 Hudson Street at 10th Street

The happy hour is Monday to Friday, from 12PM to 8PM. I feel like I should repeat that, for those of you still blinking in shock. The happy hour is eight hours long, five days a week. That’s a happy day! The discount isn’t as crazy, just $1.00 off, but it’s off of all drafts and well drinks. Again, for eight happy hours.

Best Discount Happy Hour:

Landmark Tavern, 626 Eleventh Avenue at 46th Street

While it only runs from 4PM to 7PM Monday to Friday, Landmark’s happy hour is buy-one-get-one-free for every drink. Every drink, no limits! Two for one! That’s a free drink, people. Cash in! Oh, and Mondays, there’s three-for-two buybacks on the scotch menu, which consists of 70 options!

Best Overall Happy Hour:

Thirsty Scholar, 155 Second Avenue, Between 9th and 10th Streets

Are you sitting down? Hopefully not on an overpriced barstool? Thirsty Scholar’s happy hour is seven days a week. Seven days! At last, a bar honest enough to admit that the whole “after work” thing is just an excuse to go to a bar. You want deals on your days off, too, right? It gets better: the happy hour is almost as long as our winner for longest happy hour, it’s six hours. 2PM to 8PM. Too good to be true, right? Beers go for $3.00 to $4.00, and cosmos and frozen drinks are only $4.00, and martinis top it off at only $5.00!

Best Beach Bars Outside of the City

By Jacqueline Rupp

Well summer’s heat has finally hit the city, so you know it’s definitely time to retreat to the beach. And while you’re “down the shore” reveling in these dog days, you’ll probably want to hit more than a few bars. Hey, you need to stay hydrated, right?

So where are the best places to go to get your drink on in the summer? At a beach bar of course. Here are our picks for some of the areas hottest…and most wallet-friendly beach watering holes at the shore.

________________________

The Carousel and Springfield Inn

Whether you want to drink right on the beach or head inside to enjoy some club action, The Springfield Inn at Sea Isle’s promenade is the place to be on any given night in the shore town. To save some cash, enjoy dinner al fresco at the Carousel where cheap eats are plentiful. As the sun goes down along the bay, things heat up. The Carousel becomes an outdoor tiki bar and the Springfield opens its doors. As the night progresses the party usually moves indoors with no cover specials on most weekdays and drink specials like $2 beers. For only a few bucks you can enjoy local favorites like LeCompt and Drop Dead Sexy and a sampling of Sea Isle nightlife.

43rd St, Sea Isle, NJ

http://thespringfieldinn.com/main

__________________________

Keenan’s Irish Pub

Wildwood is just that…wild, but if you want a no-risk party option, Keenan’s will have you feeling pretty lucky. The Irish Pub is famous for its nightly live music and entertainment, along with inexpensive food and drinks and a super-clean atmosphere (something any veteran bar hopper should appreciate). Unlike many clubs that target a certain demographic, Keenan’s seems to continually have mass appeal. Look for specials every day of the week, like Siesta Sundays with 5 for $15 Corona’s and half-priced Margaritas and Saturday half-priced Twisted Teas.

113 Olde New Jersey Ave, North Wildwood, NJ

http://keenansirishpub.com/
The Pool After Dark

Sure there are no shortage of bars in AC or pools for that matter. But Harrarh’s Pool After Dark is definitely worth a dip. Quickly becoming one of the poshest spots along the gaming strip, the Pool is extravagant, with private hot tubs and bikini-clad bottle service. So what’s it doing here? Well, on special Fridays and Saturdays, Harrah’s throws a smash party at the pool with $10 admission and non-stop music. For only a few bucks you can mingle among the beautiful people in this tropical indoor paradise.

777 Harrah’s Blvd, Atlantic City, NJ 08401

http://www.harrahsresort.com/casinos/harrahs-atlantic-city/casino-misc/pool-after-dark-detail.html
Cabanas Beach Bar and Grill

By day this is a family favorite destination for those hungry from a day at the beach. But by night Cabanas comes alive as a bustling bar. Centrally located smack in the heart of Cape May and overlooking the beach, Cabanas offers lots of great deals for beach goers. There’s a happy hour everyday of the week, which features ½ price beer, house wine and margaritas on the rocks. And don’t forget to snag a Cabana rewards card, so you can earn grill credits for eating and drinking.
