Put Down the Cosmo, Embrace Beer at Burp Castle

41 East 7th Street between 2nd Avenue and Cooper Square

In case you’ve been living under a rock, beer is the new cocktail. It hasn’t replaced the cocktail, which is being heralded by the still-going-strong speakeasy and mixology trends. But it has certainly come into its own and is actually considered hip, trendy, and classic. Beer is no longer reserved for frat boys and construction workers (okay, not that those stereotypes were ever exclusively true). With microbrews and impressively unique flavored imports, beer is actually becoming the wine of a new generation, with tastings and brewery tours abound.

It might not be great for your waistline, but embracing the beer trend over the cocktail trend might be the remedy for your wallet.

Now, there are plenty of bars and breweries cashing on beer’s trendiness and “now” factor, and yes, you can find beers for up to like $18.00 a glass, depending on where it hails from. But we’re not going to visit those places at the moment, are we? Instead, we are going to take advantage of the way drink prices are meant to be: beer is cheaper than liquor. And the city is full of hidden treasure bars that serve unheard of beer along with old faithful standards, all for a night out that won’t require you to dip into your student loan money.

Burp Castle manages to do the seemingly impossible for a New York bar, and that’s being unique. The cozy little hangout is decorated with plush carpeting, ivy league library-esque furniture, and a Medieval mural covering all the walls of monks, sailors, knights, maidens, and…naked maidens.

…the most important part is that Burp Castle has an almighty extensive beer list – they have everything you could dream of. And while there are more expensive options, you could have yourself a merry night of classy, fine beer drinking for about $6.00 a glass – and we’re talking hearty, plentiful pints here.

You really want to stick to tap, because they change these day to day and it’s always an interesting selection. Plus happy hour, Monday to Friday, 5PM to 8PM, beers on tap are $1.00 off. Examples of beers you’ll find on tap are Lindeman’s Pomme (Belgium), Young’s Double Chocolate Stout (England), Greenflash Triple (CA), and Piraat (Belgium). Burp Castle isn’t for a wild night out, but it’s the perfect place for a comfortable, just-hanging-out night.
