Tired of bands that try too hard to sound like Beirut or Yeah Yeah Yeahs? Boys in what have to be girl jeans with greasy side swept bangs because that’s what the cool kids are wearing? Unfortunately, that band has become a dime a dozen in NYC, almost ensuring that this is what you will see whenever you enter a bar with an unknown band on the bill. You need something different. Why not take a little vacation from the city, and let a show take you down to the country where you can listen to something you don’t hear everyday? Catching new acts at local joints is the perfect alternative to going broke on tickets to Madison Square Garden headliners, but it’s no fun when every band is the same and you leave without being able to remember one song.
Introducing GunFight!, self-described “post-country.” GunFight! is something we have been missing for quite some time now: good old fashioned, raucous Southern rock and roll. If you were disappointed by Kings of Leon’s promising Southern rock roots gone hipster, take comfort in these Brooklyn transplants: bassist Tony Aguilino, lead guitarist Bill Dvorak, vocalist/guitarist Drew Mintz, and drummer Dominic Turi. Reviews have described GunFight! as southern rock and country themes played with a modern, Brooklyn twist. Folk elements and driving drum beats weave themselves in with more complex guitar parts and melodies plus a whole lot of high energy.
GunFight! could very well be New York’s best all-out party band: don’t worry about how scene-tastic you look, just let go, kick back, and dance. Rock out, Southern style, and forget you’re in the trendy New York you love. Eat something fried. The best part is, GunFight! is routinely playing NYC dives and music joints so you can enjoy the show for next to nothing.
Catch GunFight! at LES spot Pianos on June 26th.
